School Health

School health is one component of the coordinated efforts essential to the health and safety of Maine’s school-aged children and school staff. Quality school health services are critical to the success of the missions of child development services, early childhood educational services and Maine’s public and private schools.

School nurses are licensed health care professionals working in educational settings and play a vital role in student success. They incorporate standards of nursing practice, coordination of care, leadership, and public health into schools every day.

The Maine Department of Education promotes school nursing excellence and the optimal health of Maine’s school-aged children through its school nurse consultant. By providing statewide school nursing leadership, consultation and direction for coordinated school health programs, and supporting the work of school nurses and other school staff as they work cooperatively to keep Maine’s children healthy and able to learn.
