Public School Approval

The Maine Department of Education requires school administrative units (SAUs), and approved private schools to be approved annually. Maine Rule Chapter 125 lays out the details of annual school approval, required per 20-A M.R.S.A Chapter 206. Directories of Maine schools can be found here.

The approval process for SAU schools was moved to the NEO education information system in 2015. The process originates with the SAU district office, where organizational data is verified in NEO’s Maine Schools Update and Staff modules in the spring, followed by the completion of the Public School Approval Report. Schedule reminders are sent out prior to the deadlines (May/June and December 1). Please see the Department’s Newsroom for current and past updates. The schedule is also laid out in NEO’s Reporting Calendar. The Department’s Helpdesk can assist SAUs with completion of the Public School Approval Report.

Please visit the following links for more information and instructions on how to complete these requirements:

Because compliance with all items on the School Approval Report is required in statute, schools which do not complete every item, including Public Charter Schools and Career and Technical Schools, are placed on provisional status until items are brought into compliance. The School Enrollment Specialist works with schools to bring items into compliance.
