The Maine Department of Education and the Great Schools Partnership developed a comprehensive online self-assessment process for Maine school administrative units to support action planning for proficiency-based learning at the district and school levels. The self-assessment process and criteria were informed by the experience of several school districts in Maine and New England that have successfully designed and implemented proficiency-based learning systems.
After completing the self-assessment, respondents can examine their individual and collective responses to help them determine what they may have already completed, which steps they need to address and what specific resources and guidance are available to support their planning and activities.
Tips for Using the Self-Assessment
Sign up for an account
- Creating an account is easy. Simply visit the sign-up page and enter all of the required information.
Create district survey
- Once you’ve created an account, the first step is to create a district survey. You need to identify the name of the district (e.g. RSU 100) and provide a date (e.g. July 2013).
- Every account holder can create multiple surveys for the same district – meaning you will be able to track the progress made across the varying steps over time (e.g. quarterly, annually, etc.).
- Also, account holders can create surveys for more than one district. This might be helpful for superintendents who have responsibility for more than one district.
- Finally, for each survey created, the account holder may invite others to share their responses to the survey questions. This feature is useful if incorporating the perspective of other key and informed stakeholders (e.g. district administrative team, faculty members, school board members, etc.) would be helpful.
Tip: The responses of multiple stakeholders from the same district can only be incorporated if they are invited to collaborate by the "parent" district survey account holder. It is not possible to merge the responses of account holders who have set up their own surveys independently.
Take the self-assessment
- To begin the self-assessment, click on the district/date survey to which you wish to respond.
- The survey is organized into three sections: policy, practice and community engagement.
- There are 98 yes/no questions.
- The aggregate district response is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100 percent. "No" is assigned a value of 0, and "yes" is given a value of 100 percent.
- Respondents may also select "N/A" or "In progress" as a response. When selecting the former, the response is not included in calculating the aggregate of all respondents in the district. When selecting "In progress," the response is assigned a value of 40 percent.
- To save your responses and return to the survey at a different time, click the “save” icon. You will not be able to view your results until every question has been answered and your responses have been submitted.
- Click on the district/date survey you wish to analyze. Note that the number of collaborators who have submitted a complete set of responses will be indicated.
- The initial display indicates the aggregate level of agreement regarding the completion of each step on a scale from 0 to 100 percent.
- Your own answers are indicated by the icon in the shape of a stick figure.
- The aggregate responses for individuals in the district are indicated by the icon in the shape of a building. Hovering your cursor over the icon will reveal the exact percentage.
- For the purposes of this qualitative survey, a response between 0 and 39 percent is an indication that the step itself has not really begun. In addition, the graphical scale below the icon is colored in red for this area.
- A response between 40 and 79 percent is an indication that the step itself is in progress, and the graphical scale below the icon is colored in orange.
- A response between 80 and 100 percent is an indication that the step itself can be considered complete, and the graphical scale below the icon is colored in green.
- The responses to each step’s corresponding yes/no questions can be revealed by either clicking on the step or clicking on the “expand all” icon at the top of the page. These results are also presented using the same scale and corresponding color scheme used for each step.
- The individual account holder’s responses can – at any time – be hidden by clicking on the stick figure icon at the top of the page. Similarly, the district aggregate responses can also be hidden.
- Finally, a PDF version of the results can be downloaded by clicking the appropriate icon.
