Valuing Maine’s Beaches:

Assets, Challenges, and Actions for Today and Tomorrow

Linwood Pendleton, Senior Fellow, The Ocean Foundation

Linwood Pendleton is a Senior Fellow, Director of Economic Research at The Ocean Foundation. Before joining the Ocean Foundation, Dr. Pendleton was a tenured Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at UCLA and retains an adjunct position there. Dr. Pendleton has advanced degrees in Ecology from Princeton, Public Policy from Harvard, and a doctorate from Yale's School of Forestry and Environmental studies.

Dr. Pendleton’s research focuses on how environmental and ecological conditions affect human uses of the coast and ocean. His research includes estimates of the public health and recreational costs to beach goers of polluted coastal waters, how coral health and marine protection influences diver behavior, and how ecological conditions affect decisions by boaters about where to anchorage and what activities to undertake. Dr. Pendleton is involved with three projects in CA to create indicators of coastal uses that reflect ecosystem conditions. The projects include an analysis of historical data, onsite surveys, and a new internet-based survey that uses Google Map technologies to help survey respondents pinpoint where they visit the coast.
