DAM on Cashes Ledge:
The Dynamic Area Management (DAM) zone discussed below will be effective
0001 hours December 24, 2002, through 2400 hours January 7, 2003.  When weather allows, fishermen are encouraged to remove anchored gillnet and lobster trap gear in the area noted below.  Additionally, fishermen are encouraged not to set gear in this area during the restricted time period.  The permit holder letter, which is being sent to commercial lobster trap and gillnet fishermen, is posted on the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan (ALWTRP) web page (http://www.nero.nmfs.gov/whaletrp/) under "What's New".  NMFS will also post the Federal Register notice that announces this temporary rule on December 30, 2002.  Coordinates for the DAM Zone beginning with the NW corner, are as follows:

43 13'N, 69 44'W (NW Corner)
43 13'N, 68 50'W
42 36'N, 68 50'W
42 36'N, 69 44'W (SW Corner)

DAM area on Jeffreys Ledge Expired 12/19/02

As of Wednesday, December 04, 2002, the Dynamic Area Management (DAM) zone discussed below will be effective 0001 hours December 5, 2002, through 2400 hours December 19, 2002.  The permit holder letter, which is being sent to commercial lobster trap and gillnet fishermen, is posted on the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan (ALWTRP) web page (http://www.nero.nmfs.gov/whaletrp/) under "What's New".  NMFS also posted the Federal Register notice that announces this temporary rule.

Please note that the northwestern corner of the DAM zone from 4311'N due north to 4319'N will follow the coastline.

As of Thursday, December 5, 2002, 3:25 PM, the National Marine Fisheries Services issued the following announcement:  

Dear ALWTRT Member or Interested Party:

Due to adverse weather conditions, the National Marine Fisheries Service announces that the mandatory anchored gillnet and lobster trap gear restrictions that are effective 0001 hours, December 5, 2002, through 2400 hours December 19, 2002, on Jeffreys Ledge, east of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will be changed from mandatory restrictions to voluntary restrictions. When weather allows, fishermen are encouraged to remove anchored gillnet and lobster trap gear in the area bound by the following coordinates during the restricted time period: 

43 19'N, 70 35'W
43 19'N, 69 40'W
42 39'N, 69 40'W
42 39'N, 70 35'W 

The northwestern corner of the area from 4311'N due north to 4319'N will follow the coastline. Additionally, fishermen are encouraged not to set gear in this area during the restricted time period. A revised permit holder letter regarding the voluntary restrictions in the Dynamic Area Management (DAM) zone is now posted on the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan (ALWTRP) web page (http://www.nero.nmfs.gov/whaletrp/) under "What's New". NMFS will be notifying the public of the voluntary DAM zone by issuing radio announcements, working through appropriate media, distributing the permit holder letter to affected fishermen, as well as other means.
