Fisherman assists with emptying the codend. Here's a typical catch before sorting. Each species will be sorted out and weighed.
A sample of shrimp is sorted from the rest of the catch and the different shrimp species and sexes are separated.
The carapace of each shrimp is measured using electronic calipers.
Here are northern shrimp of different sizes with approximate ages. From bottom to top: 1½-yr-old juvenile, 2½-yr-old male, 3½-yr-old female, 4½-yr-old female
