The ASMFC Atlantic Herring Section (Section) members from the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts will meet from 12:45 -1:45 p.m. on August 8, 2012 to discuss ‘days out’ measures for the remainder of the June 1 – September 30 season, including reviewing catch rates and the number of vessels fishing in Area 1A. This meeting will take place during the ASMFC Summer Meeting at the Crown Plaza Hotel Old Town, Alexandria VA, in the Board Room. For individuals who cannot attend the meeting in person, a conference call has been set up. Please dial 888-394-8197 and dial 815277 when prompted for a password.

The Section set the 2012 Area 1A total allowable catch at 26,546 metric tons and agreed to seasonal quotas with 72.8% available from June 1 – September 30 and 27.2% available from October 1 – December 31.

Currently, the Area 1A commercial herring fishery has taken 3 days out (4 landing days). Vessels are prohibited from landing more than 2,000 pounds of Atlantic herring on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Vessels may land Atlantic herring on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during this time period. Fixed gear fishermen may remove and land herring from the gear (weirs and stop seines) on the closed days.
