Department of Marine Resources to Hold Informational Meeting on Aquaculture Program

Maine Department of Marine Resources invites the public to attend an informational meeting on April 30, 2014 about its Aquaculture Program. The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Penobscot Community School at 66 North Penobscot Road in Penobscot.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide information and answer questions on the statutes and rules that govern departmental review and administration of aquaculture leases and licenses, and to offer a forum for the community to share feedback with the Department.

“Aquaculture leasing is a formal, adjudicatory process. We are trying something new here, in that the purpose of this meeting is to share information, but more importantly, to engage the local community members and stakeholders in a broader dialogue around aquaculture, rather than a specific project.” said Department of Marine Resources Deputy Commissioner Meredith Mendelson.

Maine Sea Grant staff will facilitate the meeting and representatives from the Department of Marine Resources, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will also participate.

For more information prior to the meeting, please contact the Maine Department of Marine Resources at 624-6553.
