Maine Lobster Zone A Council Meeting Minutes, April 27, 2010
All reps. Present, also Diane Tilton and Dave Burns, about a dozen attended. Minutes from 1/6/10 meeting approved.
Ghost Trap Update: Lower Machias Bay, east of Beals, west of Seahorse Rock – 260 traps recovered, 161 were fishable, 100 picked up.
Rope exchange 4/28 – 4/29 in Ellsworth – Laura Ludwig
LAC Update: discussion on old sinking rope, not recyclable. Laura looking into being an old rope broker.
Toxic Bait issue: closed days, no referendum. License suspension (3 year) different solutions will be explored.
Carl Wilson report on potential for new paradigm on health of lobster stocks.
Sarah reports on double tagging (multi-zone) B – C as of June 1.
MLA meeting in Belfast May 4 re: international fishermen
License reduction, Zone F 1 year away from 1:1 exit ratio – will a sate wide law be enacted to switch from license numbers to trap numbers. Zone A agrees that system should stay unchanged i.e. 30% reduction. If other zones want to change, let ‘em. Rep. Tilton said it was merely an administrative issue.
Student waiting list issue
Lobster Research: Kathryn Riordan for Carl Wilson – info for research and stock assessment – V-Notch info Sea sampling since 1985. After 5 years the science can be used for stock assessment purposes.
Trap limit discussion: District 1 has asked to reduce to 600, opinions of other districts seem to be against any changes. Motion made and recorded not to send out ref. vote passed 7-2.
Seed Fund: no lobsters purchased as yet with last year’s money. Zone Council A votes 9-0 to buy seed lobsters. Each rep will find dealer who will provide 300-400 # large female for DMR
