Lobster Advisory Council's Profitability and Lobster Quality Committee Meeting
July 31, 2012, HALLOWELL, MAINE – Maine Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher today released the following statement about the Lobster Advisory Council’s Profitability and Lobster Quality Committee Meeting on August 1st.
Commissioner Keliher said:
“At the July 18 Lobster Advisory Council (LAC) meeting, a Committee was formed to consider whether there are changes that could be made in the lobster fishery to improve the quality of the product landed, and the profitability of the industry. The Committee includes LAC members, processors, dealers and exporters, and industry representatives, and will meet for the first time this Wednesday, August 1st, to discuss options and suggest possible solutions. While this is a public meeting, as all Department meetings are, the LAC Committee is intended to be a working group, so there will be limited opportunity for public comment at this stage.
Please note that this is the first of many conversations on this topic. The Committee will report back to the Lobster Advisory Council at its August 16th meeting, where there will be opportunity for more industry input. Following the August 16th meeting, if there are to be any proposed changes to the lobster fishery’s management system, these ideas will be shared at Zone Council meetings, and the Department may hold additional scoping hearings as necessary to seek additional input from all parts of the supply chain. We are in the early stages of brainstorming solutions and considering options, and there will be many opportunities to weigh in during this important process. I look forward to continuing to work with everyone involved.”
