The MCEDV Advanced OCFS Domestic Abuse & Violence Training curriculum was developed to give experienced staff within OCFS the opportunity to critically examine the public health issue of domestic abuse and violence as it presents in their day-to-day work. More broadly, this advanced curriculum is designed to challenge trainees to consider the wider societal and cultural context that supports and encourages violence in intimate partner relationships. The curriculum is designed to build on itself throughout the full 12 hours, it is recommended if attending the full series to take them in sequential order. This training is not conducted in a live classroom and is not recorded.

(Note: this curriculum meets the following requirements from L.D. 1238 (126th Legis. 2013): "12 hours of coursework in family or intimate partner violence (IPV), including coursework in spousal or partner abuse that addresses screening, referral and intervention strategies, including knowledge of community resources, cultural factors, evidence-based risk assessment and same-gender abuse dynamics.")

Module 3, Part A- Accountable Language: How to Write Effective DV-Competent Narratives

Part A focuses on skills building. The goal is for caseworkers to critically analyze the way language shapes our understanding of situations, and how vital it is to write case narratives that utilize active voice and are arranged in a DV-competent manner. Trainees will critique written case narratives and practice rewriting them using active voice. Specific learning objectives include: Recognize factors that increase safety and resiliency for children Define active voice Analyze and re-write real CPS case narratives using active voice Examine tools to help write effective DV-specific narratives

Module 3, Part B- Domestic Violence: Understanding Safety and Risk

Part B dives deeper into issues of safety and risk, and how centering the safety needs and expertise of victim-survivors can lead to better outcomes for child safety, too. Specific learning objectives include: Articulate what a Protection from Abuse order is and what it is not. Describe 5 behaviors that increase risk of lethal violence being used by an abuser (5 S's) Define the difference between risk analysis and evidence-based risk assessment. Examine two risk assessment tools. Recognize the importance of centering safety needs of victim survivors.
