Message from the Superintendent (January 09, 2008)
Guess who is the best in the history of Riverview/AMHI at helping people without relying on the use of coercive measures like seclusion and restraint? Lower Kennebec. Lower Kennebec staff are working on their eighth month of no mechanical restraints! In addition, no seclusion events occurred in December. And only one (2 minute) hand on hold occurred in the entire month! And no staff injuries on the unit! December 2007 was the first month in 167 years (or so) that no restraint or seclusion occurred in the civil admission unit of the hospital. Impressive! I reflected on the way to work this morning that I worked in six other state hospitals and have never been associated with such a historic accomplishments. Great Job. I know this was accomplished solely due to the courageous work of those who dared to do things differently then those before them. Fantastic results. I hope everyone in the hospital takes a moment to congratulate a member of the Lower Kennebec team. Please share in their accomplishment. The hospital is going to work hard (and fast) to ensure that
all tools available to the staff on lower Kennebec are available
on all units of the hospital and that all staff are comfortable
using them. In a soon to occur future, all persons coming to
Riverview Psychiatric Center for help will know they do not
have to experience something like seclusion or restraint and
all our staff will know that aspect of their duties is something
they will no longer have to perform. With the greatest admiration, David S. Proffitt
