Message from the Superintendent (June 28, 2007)

“I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.” - Oprah Winfrey

This week we have celebrated the exceptional service of many of the staff working at Riverview. Your uncommon efforts in supporting those we serve are appreciated not only by your co-workers but also the families, friends, and clients that we come into contact.

Over the last year much work by many of you has made real and lasting improvements here at Riverview. The implementation and growth of the co-occurring treatment program is a great example. Our “Co-occurring Coaches” was one group recognized this week. Other examples of outstanding accomplishments are in the smoking cessation programs offered both to our clients and our staff. Riverview’s enhanced focus on healthy nutrition and addressing with greater intensity the physical health of our clients and co-workers is an effort we can all take pride in. Staff taking on the responsibility to support through example by addressing their own healthy habits is one of the things we recognized and celebrated this week.

Other staff were recognized for their role in initiating activities such as the new sensory room. The increased utilization of comfort measures for those in emotional distress such as the warmed blankets, personal music, seated massages; weighted blankets, activity boxes, and stress tolerance kits are efforts Riverview is pioneering. These are all actions, taken by our extraordinary staff that truly makes Riverview a “Center of Excellence”.

While planning out the celebration activities for this week, I learned that Riverview has 77 employees serving others for over 20 years, (and running all the way to 49 years). What a great legacy! It is an accomplishment to be esteemed. Public service is a worthy and honorable endeavor. It is with authentic admiration that we recognize those who have made a decision to spend so much of their life in giving to others. Thank you.

I also want to take a moment and recognize the additions to an revered group of co-workers identified as Riverview’s Quality Champions. Theses important Riverview members, Dr. George Davis, Laura Fisher, Steve Thum, Jeremy Morin, Dcota VanOrman, and Russ Peaslee reflect the service ethic that we all take pride in.
