Message from the Superintendent (October 24, 2006)

"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand."
-- (Thomas) Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), 28th US President, Democrat

I love the above quote. I hope you do to. It reminds me that there is more to this work then the “work”. There is reward in helping others and that should not be forgotten. Last night, on behalf of the good work all of you contribute to each day, I accepted a NAMI “Heroes in the Fight” award, Celebrating dignity, courage, hope, and recovery. This award was designed to recognize those who provide exemplary care and support for patients and their families. No other hospital in Maine was distinguished as being nominated for this award. There were over thirty nominees. In Carol Caruthers comments, she spoke to the achieved improvements at Riverview and the increased confidence persons in the state have in the facility. Again, I want to thank each of you, as all of you achieved this recognition. Congratulations.

Great job - Colleen Degan RN, who usually works on Upper Saco was working on Lower Saco on Friday. A client who has ended up in 5 point restraints over the last couple of weeks, was pacing and was quite upset and told staff they would have to place him in five points. Staff worked hard to problem solve with him, and offered him prn meds, and encourage him to pace and to make safe choices. He paced, and then calmed and watched TV. Great job by Colleen and the other LS staff! This is an example of how staff take every caution in maintaining a safe and therapeutic care environment through assisting persons served in maintaining autonomy.
