Riverview Psychiatric CenterMessage from the Superintendent (September 08, 2006)"The whole world steps aside for the man who knows where he is going." - Anon. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy this beautiful weather we are having. I want to send out a big congratulation to Dr. Patricia Black as she passed her national licensing exam a few weeks ago and her Maine licensing exam earlier this week! She is now licensed as an independent practitioner, which is a big deal. I also want to point out the great results we are having in our effort to become a “coercive free treatment environment.” Riverview has demonstrated significant progress in reducing the use of seclusion and restraint. Correlating to these reductions, are the reduced staff and client injuries that we have experienced. In addition to those great outcomes, staff’s ability to focus on the functional impairments that lead clients to feeling anxious, scared, and out of control has resulted in the delivery of better care. Good job. Something else I want you to know is that the goal above is really an ideal. The thing with ideals is they are like compasses, they give direction. It is unlikely that Riverview will stop all forms of coercive treatment in the near future. Some restraint, seclusion, or involuntary medications may continue to be needed. However making sure it is used only when other positive alternatives are not able to be applied safely, assures we maintain the highest regard for the client, for safety and the therapeutic milieu. Early this week, an event happened in the hospital were a client was placed in seclusion for an extended period. Although not what we strive to do, staff were very thoughtful and took the actions that were absolutely necessary to maintain safety for all. I want each of you to know I consider that a Great job! As always, thanks for your dedicated service, David S. Proffitt "If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable." - Seneca |
