Message from the Superintendent (December 09, 2005)

“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It's not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you had everything to do, and you've done it.” - Margaret Thatcher

I was walking through the hospital the other day and I was impressed with the number of staff that go about their jobs, do it well, and very seldom receive any real recognition or thanks. But their jobs, the functions they perform every day, are an essential part of what makes this hospital function well, look good, and present to the public, a friendly and welcoming place for all staff, visitors and clients alike. They come to work every day, to support hospital “direct care” staff in performing their duties. They often don’t get the benefit of seeing clients learn new skills, move toward greater independence, receive client’s thanks for supporting the clients recovery work, or say good by to clients when they are discharged. They just do their job, which helps all of us do ours. They are people like Moe and Kevin, who were pushing their repair cart from lower Kennebec the other day after installing a new half door on the SCU and on their way to lower Saco to do the same. Terry O’Neal, who arranged the pumpkins and flowers for the hospital entrance during Thanksgiving, and the Christmas tree in the hospital reception area last week. . Lucia, Melissa and Tammie who handle all of our personnel issues, making sure all 315 of us get paid on time. The MIS staff, Ron, Beth and Nancy, who crawl under desks and on top of filing cabinets to make sure our computers do what we need them to do. Leon , Cindy , Dora , who pay the bills, and balance the budget, Laurie, Mary, Brenda, Rochelle, Michelle and Terry who, 5 times a day, push food carts and trays with snacks and meals for clients on the units, and Dennis, who makes sure we are washing our hands, getting our shots, and practicing good health, and Fred and Glenn who buff floors and fill laundry carts. I know they are a lot more of this hospital’s staff who quietly, but with dedication and purpose, go about their duties and I also know you don’t get the recognition and thanks you deserve, so please , I extend to all of you, named and not named, a sincere thanks on the part of all Riverview staff and want you to know your work is needed, noticed and appreciated.

So this week, for the unsung workers who quietly do their jobs so that we may do ours…thank you.
