Riverview Pychiatric CenterMessages from the Superintendent (October 20, 2005)"Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world's work, and the power to appreciate life." - Brigham Young This week I want to take a moment and share my thoughts about an important role Riverview has in our state. Part of our Vision is to be a "Center for best Practice ... treatment, education and research ..." As we move to create this vision into a reality, we are focusing more and more on being a learning organization that, in part, serves our clients by educating Riverview staff as well as community providers in the techniques and technologies of psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and the art of recovery. The Director of Staff Education, Lauret Crommett is being tasked with implementing learning opportunities for staff to satisfy their need for access to state of the art information and research. In that regard, she has arranged for some outstanding educational opportunities to be delivered over the next several months. Sessions on Psychiatric Rehabilitation Approach and Respectful Service Delivery are two I hope all staff will take advantage. Lauret is also developing a mechanism to get journal information out on the units. The Program Service Directors and Nursing Leadership are developing mythologies to ensure staff get the chance to discuss implications of this training and ideas that may lead to enhanced service delivery. As we increase the delivery of education here at Riverview we also want to be increasing the educational opportunities for our community. Outside agencies will be increasingly invited to partake in these experiences along with us. Care topic experts here at Riverview (Like Dr. Mayo, Arlene Emery-Kaufman, Dr. Nelson, Tina Libby, among many others), will also be progressively asked to share their knowledge with outside organizations. I am hopeful that as we accelerate this journey, more Riverview staff, from every area of the hospital, will become champions of learning and sharing their knowledge here at Riverview and in the community.
