Facility & Setting
Riverview Psychiatric Center (RPC), located in Augusta Maine, is a state psychiatric hospital that serves clients who are under civil commitment and forensic clients referred by the courts and jails. RPC in collaboration with the community is a center for best practice treatment, education, and research for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders. In addition to the 92 -bed inpatient facility RPC operates two outpatient clinics and a Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team.
Opened in 2005, Riverview is a modern state-of-the-art building that supports client autonomy and recovery-focused treatment. RPC has been held as a model for other psychiatric hospitals in successful reduction of seclusion and restraint measures, for becoming tobacco free, and for our active group treatment program or “treatment mall”. As part of its commitment to reducing the use of seclusion and restraints, Riverview emphasizes proactive and innovative approaches that include identifying early stages of agitation and offering de-escalation tools. The multi-sensory rooms, recent additions to Riverview, have been helpful to clients by alleviating distress and promoting relaxation and a sense of control.
