Department of Psychological Services

The mission of the Riverview Psychiatric Center’s Department of Psychological Services is to provide state of the art consultation, assessment, and psychotherapeutic services for clients recovering from mental illness and co-occurring (substance abuse) disorders. Psychologists at Riverview promote the recovery of clients we serve through the application of psychological principles and methods in consultations, assessments, and a variety of psychotherapeutic services. The Department of Psychological Services provides consultation and training on state of the art treatment methods to improve the quality of mental health and co-occurring services across disciplines.

The clinical services offered by the Department of Psychological Service include a wide range of therapeutic modalities including individual and group psychotherapy, clinical consultation and psychological assessment. Psychology provides a broad range of assessments in response to specific referral questions posed by the treatment teams throughout the hospital. Assessments include psychological testing to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, and neuropsychological testing to address more complex diagnostic questions for clients who present with complicated cognitive problems and who may have histories of brain trauma and/or substance abuse. Psychologists provide capacity evaluations to address clients’ ability to make decisions about medical treatment. Unit psychologists provide consultation to treatment teams and develop specialized behavioral plans as needed. In addition, the forensic psychologists provide clinical risk assessments for forensic clients transitioning to the community and for forensic clients served in by the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team.

Riverview is the proud recipient of a “Co-Occurring State Initiative Integration” (COSII) grant for the integration of co-occurring (substance abuse and mental illness) treatment. Riverview is committed to the improvement of co-occurring services and as a pilot site will be implementing changes to our treatment programs and policies as well as conducting research on the effectiveness of our efforts. The “Co-occurring Coaches” promote awareness and education of co-occurring/addiction issues and treatment, and serve as an advisory group for the project.

There is a licensed psychologist assigned to each clinical unit and to the ACT team. Psychological services can be accessed through the treatment team and/or physicians orders. Inquiries about services can be addressed to any of the unit psychologists or to the Director of Psychology.
