Medical Staff - William H. Nelson, MD

William H. Nelson, MD has been serving as Medical Director of the Riverview Psychiatric Center (formerly AMHI) since June of 2002. He also serves as Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, NH. Dr. Nelson is a board-certified psychiatrist in the specialties of adult and geriatric psychiatry. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and an active member of the Maine Psychiatric Association and the Maine Medical Association. He is a graduate of Duke University, West Virginia University, and the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Prior to moving to Maine in 2001, Dr. Nelson served as Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Georgia. Throughout his clinical and academic career he has had a strong interest in public mental health issues, in the care of adults and seniors with serious mental illness, and in medical education.

He is the author of over 50 publications and major national and international presentations focusing on such areas as clinical depression, neuroendocrinology, geriatric mental health treatment, and medical education.
