Medical Staff - George E. Davis, Jr., MD

George E. Davis, Jr., M. D., is an internist who has practiced at the Augusta Mental Health Institute (now Riverview Psychiatric Center) for 17 years. He majored in chemistry at Cornell University, obtained his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston in 1968, and subsequently took specialty training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at SUNY in Buffalo. After 17 years of private practice, he began work here in the Medical Support Unit and quickly became interested in systemic issues in behavioral health. He and a colleague, Dr. Walter Lowell, have applied aspects of artificial neural networks, systems theory, cybernetics and complexity theory to problems in psychiatry. This research resulted in papers that propose a new method of measuring quality of psychiatric care and a method of efficiently sizing a mental health care delivery system. More recently, he and Dr. Lowell have been interested in environmental modulators of mental illness and have speculated on the effects of ultraviolet radiation on human neurodevelopment. He resides in Augusta, Maine.
