Banned Performance-Enhancing Substances
In spring of 2006,
the legislature passed a law requiring the Office of Substance Abuse
to identify dietary supplements from the NCAA banned substances list. Student athletes in Maine schools
are prohibited from utilizing these supplements and schools are required
to add them to their athletic policies as banned substances.
There has been a great
deal of press on professional athlete’s use of performance-enhancing drugs. Many
athletes may attempt to enhance their performance by taking stimulants
or steroids or steroid precursors. While performance may be
improved in the short term, many of these drugs and supplements have
long term negative effects and some may even cause dependency. We
have included a number of articles on the Banned Substances Resource Page regarding the risks
of using performance enhancing drugs and supplements and encourage
all coaches and school personnel to become knowledgeable about the
use and abuse of these compounds.
This list includes performance-enhancing
substances that are or have been marketed as supplements as opposed
to drugs. These products may be legal to purchase, but under state
law enacted as of 8/22/06 are considered banned substances for student
athletes in Maine.
