AUGUSTA, ME--Kimberly Johnson, Director of the Maine Department of Health
and Human Services’ Office of Substance Abuse (OSA), recently received
an award from the Women’s Addiction Services Council in recognition of
her outstanding service to women and their families affected by substance abuse.
“Every year the Women’s Addiction Services Council selects and
recognizes an individual who has demonstrated an understanding of the specific
obstacles faced by women affected by substance abuse and has been a catalyst
to make things happen that remove some of these barriers,” said Carol
Troy, Director of The Women’s Project, “Kim has shown this commitment
over the years in both her former role as Executive Director of Crossroads
for Women and as the OSA Director. She has provided the leadership which resulted
in many new initiatives supporting women’s’ access to substance
abuse treatment, for example, the CAMP program at Crossroads and her collaborations
with Child Protective Services.”
In 2004, Johnson was a recipient of the Department of Health and Human Services
Commissioner’s Award providing national recognition for preventing child
abuse and neglect.
Prior to working at OSA, Johnson served as executive director of Crossroads,
a Maine substance abuse treatment program, where she was instrumental in developing
an innovative residential program known as the CAMP program, which allowed
women to bring their children with them into treatment.
The Women’s Addiction Services Council is a statewide organization made
up of seven member agencies that share a commitment to supporting women who
are engaged in treatment and recovery. They are: Crossroads for Women, Inc.;
Maine Association of Substance Abuse Programs; Maine Pre-Trial Services; New
Directions, Health Reach Network; Supported Journey Into Recovery, a program
of Community Concepts, Inc.; The Women’s Project, a program of People’s
Regional Opportunity Program; and Wellspring, Inc.
