Targeted Case Management Assessment Tool

November 12, 2013

The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment is an open domain tool that addresses the mental health of children, adolescents and their families. The Department has researched CANS and finds that the individualized detail of this assessment, in combination with its intervention service planning capabilities, makes it a superior tool for efficient and responsive client service delivery. The Department has approved this tool for immediate use as the CANS tool meets the MaineCare Benefits Manual Chapter II, Section 13, Targeted Case Management, Eligibility Criteria for Children with Behavioral Health Disorders and for Children with Developmental Disabilities/Intellectual Disabilities. You will now have a choice of using the CANS instead of the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scales (CAFAS) or the Children’s Habilitation Assessment Tool (CHAT) to meet the requirement. Both the CAFAS and the CHAT still meet the requirement. To read the complete letter sent to Targeted Case Management providers regarding this new tool, go to the Targeted Case Management Assessment Tool Letter on MaineCare’s Provider Updates webpage.

The Department will promulgate rules in the future to reflect this policy clarification. If you have any questions regarding the policy, Provider Relations Specialist by visiting the policy assignment breakdown on MaineCare’s website.
