Maine initiated New Hire Reporting in January 1995, over a year before Welfare Reform mandated it. Maine’s law is tougher than the Federal Law and it has benefited the children of Maine. In 1995, child support collected by payroll deduction represented about 35 million dollars. At the end of this past State Fiscal Year over 60 million of the 100 million dollars collected were made by payroll deduction. We are thankful for the help of Maine’s employers. They have made a difference for Maine kids.
