- Turn on your laptop and get to the opening Windows95 screen.
- Make sure that your laptops modem is connected to a standard telephone line.
- Select START/MeCare Dial-in, or Double-click on the "Connect to MeCare" or
"MeCare Dial-in" Icon on the Desktop
When you do this, you will see the ShivaRemote or Windows Dial-up networking dialogue box. The only thing you
would ever change here would be to enter a "9" or a "9," in the telephone number box
if you had to use a 9 to access an outside line, or a *70 to disable call waiting. (Remember to take the 9 out if you
usually don't need one to get a dial-tone.)
- Press Enter, or click on the Connect button. If you are connected to a good
phone line, you should see that it is dialing, and hear the noise as it connects
(assuming you have your sound turned up.) If you successully dial, you will get a
screen asking you to enter your ID.
- Enter your Shiva ID here and press Enter or select OK (Note that this is not your MeCare ID.)
- You will then be asked to enter your passcode. This is your four digit PIN, followed
immediately (with no space) by the 6 digits displayed in your SecureID card. Note: If
the number displayed in the "SecureID" card changes in mid-stream, just enter the new
number (making sure you preceed it with your PIN)
- After you have entered the passcode, press Enter or select OK
- Assuming that you have made no errors in entering your ID or passcode, you should get
a message saying "Passcode accepted" If you have not, you will get a message saying
"Passcode denied".
- Passcode accepted This means that you have successfully established a
data link to the State of Maine's WAN. You should get a dialogue box indicating that
you are connected, providing you with statistics regarding the call (should you be
interested) and a disconnect button. You will also notice a "ShivaRemote" button on
your "Start bar" at the bottom of the screen. You may minimize this dialogue if you
want to (by clicking on the button with the small horizontal line in it in the upper
right hand corner of the ShivaRemote dialogue box), but leaving it open on your desktop
will in no way prevent you from continuing to do your work. Your next step is to
run the MeCare application.
- Passcode denied This means you made some mistake in entering either your
ID, or your passcode. Shiva will allow you 3 tries to correct your mistake. If you do
not enter the correct combination within 3 tries, it will kick you out, and disconnect
your connection. If this happens, just start over at step 3.
- When you have finished with your MeCare activities which require a connection, you
can click on the "ShivaRemote" button on your "Start bar" When you do, the ShivaRemote
dialogue will appear. Click on the Disconnect button. This will disconnect
your phone connection, and turn your modem off. After the box dissappears, you can
disconnect the line from your modem.
