Closing Win95/Starting problems Return to FAQ page
In the normal course of events, you should close out of Win95 by pressing the Start button, and selecting Shut Down. Sometimes you can't do that - if MeCare or Internet Explorer or some other application "hangs", and the only way to shut down is to press the power switch. When you restart your laptop, you will often get the message below:
     Starting Windows 95 . . .

     Hibernation file is already present.
     IBM AntiVirus DOS Shield (9621) Copyright IBM Corporation 1989 - 1996 V 2.5.1

Windows was not properly shut down. One or more of your disk drives may have errors on it. Press any key to run ScanDisk on these drives . . .

When you press any key, ScanDisk will run. ScanDisk may find some errors on the drive as a result of you having to turn off the laptop without shutting down normally. If it does find errors, you can tell ScanDisk to Fix them by pressing F. It will ask you if you want to create an Undo disk. Tell it to Skip undo by pressing S ScanDisk should then complete it's process, and Windows should start up normally.
