National Family Caregiver Support ProgramOn November 13, 2000, through reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) became law. Maine’s five area agencies on aging provide the following services to caregivers of older adults or to grandparents age 60 and over caring for grandchildren age 18 or younger as delineated in the NFCSP: information; assistance; individual counseling, organization of support groups and caregiver training; respite care; and supplemental services. The Office of Elder Services funds the NFCSP through a grant from the Administration on Aging. Each area agency on aging has a Family Caregiver Program Coordinator and an Alzheimer’s Coordinator who specializes in caregivers of persons with a dementia. Please contact these coordinators for more information.
