The following links will help you to view statistics on and warning signs of suicide among the elderly
and depressed.
The following Internet Web Sites are listed for your convenience. The list is not all-inclusive, nor
should it be considered an endorsement of the accuracy of, or support for, the information/views expressed

- American Association of Suicidology - The
AAS site contains contact information for local crisis centers, local suicide survivor groups, and
an index on suicide topics, including suicide of older men and women.
- American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - The
AFSP provides suicide facts, support for suicide survivors, information on depression and suicide,
as well as current research on suicide.
- Befrienders International - Befrienders
International is volunteer-resourced suicide service available worldwide. Although there are no Befrienders
centers in Maine, the site contains contact information for the centers in the Northeast.
- Depression and Suicide Prevention Suicidal.com
provides lists of suicide intervention/crisis prevention hotline numbers, answers on general depression
and suicide questions, personal stories and crisis web links.
- Have a Heart - Have a Heart's
Suicide Help page provides information on understanding suicide, ways to find help and how to help
others who are suicidal.
- Older Adults,
Depression and Suicide - This site is composed of statistics on the number of
depressed persons aged 65 and over in the United States, statistics on the number of people
who visit their primary care physician prior to committing suicide and a cue card for older
adults on recognizing the symptoms of depression.

Suicide Prevention - This site contains lists of articles on all topics surrounding
suicide, including statistics, depression, managed care, causes and prevention.
- Suicide Awareness\Voices of Education - This
SA\VE site contains information on suicide symptoms, misconceptions about suicide, depression facts,
including elderly depression, and an online form to request publications.
- Suicide and Manic-Depressive
Illness - This page contains statistics on the rates of attempted suicide in those
with Manic Depressive illness, as well as statistics on suicide completions, gender differences
in suicide and information on the effects of course of illness and clinical states on suicide.
- Suicide Facts - This
site is produced by the National Institute on Mental Health and outlines their findings while researching
suicide, as well as provides suicide statistics.
