Alzheimer's Research and Policy Brief (Adobe PDF*) (*free viewer) - Caring for People with Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia in Maine Services for people with Alzheimer's Disease or other dementias, and their caregivers include diagnosis and evaluation at memory clinics, adult day services, in-home and overnight respite, home care services and special care units in residential care and nursing facilities. Adult day services are available throughout the state. Some are designed specifically for persons with dementia. To ask for help with the cost of these services, talk directly with the day program you might use. Up to two weeks a year of overnight respite is offered at certain nursing homes, residential facilities, or at home. The "Partners in Caring" program at your local Agency on Aging may help to cover the cost of these respite services. See pages A1-A2 for the Area Agency on Aging that serves the area you live in. Information about services and assistance for individuals with dementia is available from the Alzheimer's Association. They also provide lists of support groups. Contact the Association to request their directory. The directory shows where you can find the following services in each county of Maine: Diagnosis and Evaluation Units (Memory Clinics); Geriatricians; Elder Law Attorneys; Respite Programs; Support Groups; Adult Day Services; Home Health and Homemaker Agencies; Residential and Nursing Facilities with Alzheimer's (Special Care) Units.
