AUGUSTA - First Lady Karen Baldacci and the Maine Departments of Education and Health and Human Services recognized five school systems for excellence in promoting healthy schools and healthy students and staff on Wednessday.

The ceremony was held at the Hall of Flags in the Statehouse and was followed by a reception at the Blaine House. School systems with exemplary programs received a $2,000 award, while those receiving meritorious honors received $1,000. Now in its fourth year, the program is funded by Hannaford Bros. Co and co-sponsored by the Governor’s Children’s Cabinet and the Governor’s Council on Physical Activity.

The Excellence in Coordinated School Health Awards program provides school systems with local and state recognition for their leadership in coordinating school health for the benefit of increased student learning and health promotion for students and staff. The awards program is designed to recognize school systems that can serve as models of excellence for others.

School systems receiving awards have been able to demonstrate best practices in the areas of School Nutrition and/or Family, Youth and Community Involvement, as well as an ability to coordinate with other components of school health such as physical education/physical activity and health services. The criteria for excellence are based on the State of Maine Guidelines for Coordinating School Health Programs.
