Dental Amalgam

In 2001, the Maine State Legislature passed a law directing the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to make a brochure about the advantages and disadvantages to human health and the environment of using mercury amalgam fillings in dental work. The Maine Dental Practice Act (Title 32 MRSA Ch. 16, Subchapter 3,  §1094-C) requires that any dentist who uses mercury or a mercury amalgam in any dental procedure must provide each patient with a copy of that brochure and also must display a poster in the public waiting area of the office stating that the brochure is available. The brochure includes information about other filling materials, to help patients in choosing what will be best for them.
