Physical Activity & Nutrition Program
Physical activity and proper nutrition are key components in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and their risk factors, including high blood pressure, overweight and obesity.
The Maine Physical Activity and Nutrition Program (PANP) coordinates state-wide efforts to support Maine people in achieving recommended levels of physical activity and proper nutrition to prevent and treat chronic diseases, including overweight and obesity.
The Maine Physical Activity and Nutrition Plan 2005-2010 is a guiding document for the PAN Program, health professionals, business leaders, the food industry, policymakers, educators, the media, and citizens to improve the health and well-being of Maine people. The plan outlines key objectives and strategies for youth and adults with eight focus areas:
- Physical Activity
- Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables
- Caloric Imbalance and Expenditure
- Television Time
- Food Safety
- Food Security
- Eating Disorders
Physical Activity and Nutrition Coordinating Council: The purpose of the PAN Coordinating Council, which is made up of over 30 State-level partners, is to communicate, coordinate, integrate, and leverage resources to promote optimal standards and practices in and across programs with physical activity and nutrition components.
Physical Activity and Nutrition Advisory Group: The PAN Advisory Group has over 20 non-government members. Its role is to organize key stakeholders with an interest in physical activity and nutrition issues in Maine. Their role is to inform, communicate, and educate regarding the goal of the Physical Activity and Nutrition Program.
