What are we going to do? Make it YOUR business to fight the flu.
(York County) Business Matters Fight the Flu is an vaccine clinic tool kit for employers created by the York District Public Health Council. The toolkit includes: recommended strategies, local provider information and “How to Host an On-site Flu Clinic”.
Every year influenza, or “flu,” affects employers and businesses. Flu costs businesses approximately $10.4 billion nationally in direct costs for hospitalizations and outpatient visits for adults. For a small business state like Maine, Flu is a big disruption. To minimize absenteeism, employers frequently offer onsite seasonal flu vaccination to their employees.
At their quarterly meeting, on September 14, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at People's Choice Credit Union, 23 Industrial Park Drive, in Saco, the York District Public Health Council will release this important tool kit for business.
Partners from multi-sectors throughout York County have collaborated on this project with the mutual goal of increasing the number of adults who are vaccinated against the flu.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness. Each year, the flu impacts 5-20% of the U.S. adult population. Complications from the flu are responsible for more than 200,000 hospitalizations and an average of 36,000 deaths. From an employer’s perspective, the flu causes diminished productivity and increased work absence.
According to both Maryanna Arsenault, Council Chair and CEO, HomeHealth Visiting Nurses, "This resource will provide York County business and employers with what they need to assist their employees in getting a Flu vaccine. The tool kit includes a listing of all local vaccinators/ providers that can offer comprehensive Flu vaccine services to large and small business in Southern Maine."
