The Source Water Protection Section of the Maine Drinking Water Program (DWP) was established in early 1998 to coordinate some existing activities of the DWP and plan and implement additional projects and functions, many resulting from the 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. Staff in the Source Water Protection Section approve New Wells, serve on the Maine Water Well Drilling Commission, provide technical assistance to private well owners, produce maps for DWP staff, communities and other agencies, administer the source water protection planning grant program and work cooperatively with other groups and state agencies.

The Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP), mandated by EPA, assesses the vulnerability of the state's public water supplies and provides communities with information and resources to better protect their water sources. As part of the Source Water Assessment program a consulting hydrogeologist, Gail Lipfert, was hired to complete delineations of bedrock wells serving large community water systems.

A GIS database has also been developed and is being used to protect public water sources. This database contains GPS (global positioning system) locations of all public water supply wells and intakes in the State of Maine. A wellhead protection area coverage has also been added. Gravel well delineations and watersheds for surface water supplies will be added as they come available. You can find a list of your county's public water supplies online by clicking here. The Maine Office of GIS also has an internet mapping site where you can find locations of public water supplies in your hometown. Hard copy color maps are also available for municipalities and consultants upon request from Drinking Water Program.
