REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION OF CONTINUOUS CHLORINATION SYSTEMS

 

The continuous chlorination system shall consist of the following items:

1.      A chemical feed pump, which is paced to the flow of potable water in the system.

2.      A chlorine solution tank.

3.      A minimum of 10 minutes of contact time from the chlorine solution injection point to the first customer.

4.      A free chlorine residual monitoring kit.

5.      Maintain a free chlorine residual in the distribution system within the range of 0.2 mg/l to 0.7 mg/l

 

The Drinking Water Program recommends that you contact a water treatment professional for an evaluation of your water and water system before installation of a chlorination system.  Elevated levels of iron, manganese and other inorganics may interfere with the intended operation of your chlorination system.  Additionally, other treatment processes may affect or be affected by the addition of chlorine.

 

All treatment changes at public water systems must be reviewed and approved by the DWP prior to construction.  However, if the system is installed in accordance with the enclosed Continuous Chlorination Disinfection System Installation Guidance Document, prior review of the system is not required.  The DWP will conduct a post construction inspection of the system to ensure the system meets all DWP requirements.  Please notify the DWP as soon as the disinfection system has been installed so a field engineer can inspect it.

 

After the continuous chlorination system is operational, a free chorine residual must be maintained throughout the system.  The PWS must submit monthly operational reports, indicating residual levels, to the DWP by the tenth day of the month following the compliance month.  Chlorine residual samples must be collected daily for a period of four weeks immediately following installation of the disinfection system.  After the DWP has determined that the chlorine residual has been maintained at consistent levels, sampling for chlorine residuals may be reduced depending on system size and complexity.  Reduced monitoring shall be no less than twice per week.  However, the DWP reserves the right to require increased monitoring if problems arise with the PWS.  If you need further information please contact a member of the Field Services Section at (207) 287-2070.
