  • Injury is the leading cause of death among our youngest citizens, accounting for approximately 30% of all years of life lost before age 65.
  • It surpasses all major diseases as a cause of prematurely lost years of life, exceeding losses from heart disease, cancer, and stroke combined.
  • Injuries and injury related deaths, both unintentional and intentional, account for millions of dollars of health care costs and immeasurable pain, suffering and diminished quality of life.

Implementation of effective injury prevention initiatives:

  • Saves lives,
  • Prevents injury-related disabilities, and
  • Decreases health care and associated costs.

Increasing awareness that most serious injuries are predictable and preventable is a significant challenge for injury prevention practitioners.

The MIPP is supported through:

  • Maternal and Child Health Block Grant;
  • Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant;
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through the Bureau of Highway Safety;
  • State legislative appropriations;
  • Governor's Children's Cabinet.
