Division of Chronic Disease > Healthy Maine Partnerships > Maine Cardiovascular Health Program > Risk Factors Tobacco UseTobacco use is the number one preventable cause of serious illnesses such as heart disease and stroke. On average, tobacco kills seven Maine people every day. One of these is a nonsmoker who dies because of exposure to secondhand smoke. If you do not smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, try to stop. Need help quitting? Call the Maine Tobacco HelpLine at 1-800-207-1230, or talk with your health care provider.
