Maine Cardiovascular Health Program

The Maine CDC Cardiovascular Health Program in the Maine Department of Health and Human Services works to prevent death and disability from heart disease and stroke in Maine. We promote a way of life that supports and includes preventing and controlling risk factors, especially high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, and increasing timely care for heart attacks and strokes. To accomplish this we partner with state and local organizations, educate Maine residents, and offer technical assistance, resources and training to community organizations, health care providers and employers.

Program Priorities:

  • Control high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Control high blood cholesterol
  • Know signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke and need to call 911
  • Improve emergency response for heart attack and stroke
  • Improve quality of care related to cardiovascular disease prevention and control
  • Eliminate disparities related to cardiovascular disease prevention and control

Goals:

Our Program Goal is to reduce death, disability, and health care costs due to heart disease and stroke among Maine citizens.

Programmatic Goals:

  • Goal 1 -Optimize state wide capacity to improve cardiovascular health and prevent and control cardiovascular disease
  • Goal 2 -Prevent development of risk factors
  • Goal 3 -Identify and control risk factors
  • Goal 4 -Optimize response systems to identify and treat acute events
  • Goal 5 -Optimize care systems to prevent complications, disability and disease progression
  • Goal 6 -Eliminate disparities in the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors
