Maine CDC Home > Disease-Specific Information > Antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae Antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae:Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a Gram-positive encapsulated coccus that often colonizes the human nasopharynx, where it can be carried asymptomatically. More than 90 serotypes of pneumococci exist; of strains causing invasive disease, 88% are serotypes included in the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine. Before the new pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was introduced in 2001, over 80% of invasive isolates in children <5 years old were included in the 7-valent vaccine. Because pneumococci resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics are increasing recognized, antibiotic susceptibility testing is indicated for all invasive infections. Maine monitors the incidence of invasive pneumococcus through mandatory reporting by health care providers, clinical laboratories and other public health partners. |
