Maine CDC Home > Disease-Specific Information > Group B Streptococcal Disease Group B Streptococcal Disease:Invasive Group B Streptococcal (GBS) disease emerged in the 1970s as the most common cause of sepsis in newborns. Invasive GBS infection among adults was recognized more recently. Infections among newborns have declined by 70% since national guidelines recommend the increased use of intrapartum prophylaxis. In neonates, invasive GBS infection can result in sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. Adults with GBS infection may present with sepsis and soft tissue infections. Pregnancy-related infections may include sepsis, amnionitis, urinary tract infection, and stillbirth. Maine monitors the incidence of invasive GBS through mandatory reporting by health care providers, clinical laboratories and other public health partners. |
