and encapsulated strains. The encapsulated strains are further classified into serotypes a through
f, based on the antigenic characteristic of their polysaccharide capsules. H. influenzae serotype b
(Hib) is the most pathogenic. Since 1990, routine use of the Hib conjugate vaccine has decreased the
incidence of invasive Hib disease in children. Maine monitors the incidence of invasive H. influenzae
through mandatory reporting by health care providers, clinical laboratories and other public health
partners. Haemophilus influenzae Type b (Hib) can become a very serious infection in chidren 5
and under
