Maine Hepatitis Services

Criteria to Receive Free* Hepatitis C Testing & Free* Hepatitis A and B Vaccine at State Sponsored Sites

Hepatitis A and B Vaccine

Hepatitis A and B vaccine will be provided via the contracting public health departments for adults meeting one or more of the following risk criteria:

For Hepatitis A Vaccine (HAV)

  • Men who have sex with men
  • Individuals living with chronic liver disease

For Hepatitis B Vaccine (HBV)

  • Household and sexual contacts of chronic hepatitis B carriers
  • Sexually active men and women
  • Individuals living with chronic liver disease such as hepatitis C

Hepatitis C Testing

Hepatitis C testing will be provided via the contracting locations for persons meeting one or more of the following risk criteria:

  • Injection drug use (ever)
  • Transfusion/organ transplantation (prior to July 1992)
  • Hemophilia (factor concentrates prior to 1987)
  • Past or present hepatitis C positive sexual partner
  • History of occupational blood exposure
  • Ever on chronic hemodialysis
  • Persistently abnormal alnine aminotransferase levels (ALT)
  • Born to HCV positive mother

Other:

  • +Received a tatoo in an unsanitary/unlicensed setting
  • +Received body piercing in an unsanitary/unlicensed setting
  • +Note: risk not definitively linked to hepatitis C

*Some sites may charge a minimal administrative fee, usually ~$5
