2008 - 2009 Activities
The bullets below identify and describe some of the current efforts of the Maine Comprehensive
Cancer Control Program.
- Partnering with the Healthy
Maine Partnerships
to
implement a statewide, multi-phase community outreach and education program to increase awareness
and screening of colon cancer among Maine adults, age 50 and older.
- Distributing Screen ME! Colon Cancer Community Action Kits
to Healthy Maine partnerships in all Maine
Public Health Districts.
- Awarded funds in July of 2009 to facilitate the establishment, development and implementation
of a free Colorectal Cancer Screening Program to reduce the burden of colorectal cancer in
Maine.
- Publishing the first Maine
Cancer Surveillance Document.
- Awarding 25 mini-grants in the amount of $1,000 each to interested childcare centers for
skin cancer prevention efforts.
- Implementing Sun Blocks, a sun safety program for Maine childcare
centers which includes professional development for staff, early childhood education, and skin
cancer prevention resources.
- Creating and now distributing sun safety education and information
kits to Maine Parks and Recreation Departments across the state.
- Funding projects to address cancer disparities among Maine’s Native American Tribes.
- Partnering with the Healthy Maine Partnerships to enhance each Maine community’s Chronic
Disease Self Management Supports for people living with and managing chronic disease.
- Supporting the Maine
Cancer Consortium
,
and its workgroups, in its collaborative effort to reduce the overall burden of cancer in Maine.
- Facilitating the revision and republication of the Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control
plan: 2011-2015.
- Conducting participatory evaluation of the Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, the
Maine Cancer Consortium, and implementation of the Maine Cancer Plan.
