Vaccine Distribution

Information for Providers

Priority Groups | Distribution | Supply | Private Purchase External site disclaimer

Influenza vaccine supplied from CDC by the state of Maine is distributed each fall to contracted health-care providers who agree to provide vaccination at a reduced patient cost to those at-risk. The Maine CDC anticipates supplying contracted providers with adequate supply to vaccinate 100% of the at-risk pediatric population and 100% of the at-risk adult population.

There are other channels through which influenza vaccine is distributed in Maine, in addition to Maine CDC distribution channels. These include

  • Private Sector Health Care Providers
  • Private Sector Businesses and Employers

Health care providers, especially those caring for adults, often order flu vaccine from pharmaceutical sales representatives. Visiting nurses associations also receive vaccine directly from manufacturers through Medicare contracts, and provide vaccine to high-risk Mainers through vaccine clinics.

Many Mainers receive influenza vaccine from their local supermarket, pharmacy, or employment setting. Large employers, like Hannaford’s or Rite Aid, typically contract with companies to hold influenza vaccination clinics that are open to the public. There is usually a cost associated with receiving vaccine through these channels.
