Region I - Office of Substance Abuse

The Office of Substance Abuse (OSA) is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. OSA regulates and contracts with community based programs and agencies to provide services to individuals and families suffering from the effects of alcohol and other drug problems.

There are times in our lives when we may need to seek information, advice, support, or counseling on a substance abuse situation. Sometimes the help is for ourselves. At other times it is out of our concern for the other people involved in our lives. It is often difficult to know where to turn for information and help, especially if one is unfamiliar with the services available or there is a need to keep the request confidential. Should you, or someone you know, be experiencing problems associated with the use of alcohol and/or other drugs, and would like to seek confidential services, this resource can help you attain them.

Assessments and/or Evaluation by professional counselors are available to see if there is a problem with substance abuse.

Treatment for substance abuse is individual, family and/or group settings can be located in your geographic area.

  • There are over 200 licensed treatment agencies in Maine. These include both inpatient and outpatient facilities.
  • Treatment is also provided in an outpatient setting by licensed private counselors not associated with agencies.
  • Treatment can be varying lengths of time and intensity according to people's needs.

Support/Self Help Groups can be found in all local communities. They are usually listed in the beginning of the advertisement section of the newspaper and the telephone directory.

Other services available include: Information and education materials in the form of pamphlets, reading materials, video tapes and community based education as well as referrals to treatment services and support groups are available.

For more information on these services call the Information and Resources Center of the Office of Substance Abuse at: 1-800-499-0027, you may also explore the OSA website.
