    History
The Elizabeth Levinson Center was established in 1971 for children with severe or profound mental retardation by the State of Maine. The Levinson Center operates under the authority of the Behavioral Health and is part of the organizational structure of Region III.

Purpose
The Elizabeth Levinson Center serves  medically fragile children from Maine with severe and profound mental retardation ages birth thorough twenty in a combined residential and medical program.

The primary purpose of the Elizabeth Levinson Center is evaluation and treatment for children with severe and profound mental retardation and multiple medical disabilities. The Center also offers respite care to those parents whose children can not be served in the community and have significant medical needs.

The children are accepted to the facility through an Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) process and approved by the State and federal government.

Judicial Certification
All children receive judicial certification for three to twenty-four months and participate in an educational or vocational program. Each of the individually designed programs for the children is implemented and monitored by educational, medical, nursing, psychological, and other professional staff.

The Elizabeth Levinson Center offers in-service education for Departmental Staff and training for area public school and community agencies. The educational program for all the individuals living at the Elizabeth Center is provided by local schools.

Referrals and Application
Referrals can be made by you or your caseworker to the Elizabeth Levinson Center social worker. An application and a packet of information will be mailed to you.

Once you have completed and returned the application, a pre-admission meeting will be scheduled to determine your child's eligibility for admission. Sometimes a team from the Elizabeth Levinson Center visits you at home before the pre-admission meeting to talk informally with you and your family.

Respite

The Elizabeth Levinson Center reserves four beds to take children living in the community who meet the admission criteria. The Center provides families temporary relief and rest. Children may stay up to 20 days consecutively and a total of 60 days per year.
