Property Tax & Rent Refund

The Maine Residents Property Tax Program offers tax and rent relief to elderly people who own their own homes or rent an apartment or house. Applications are accepted between August 1st and May 31st of the following year (for example, August 1, 2007 – June 2, 2008 [May 31st falls on a Saturday]). Eligibility is based on income and taxes or rent paid in the previous calendar year.

General tax assistance is for income eligible owners and renters of any age. Maximum refund is $2,000. People of any age who were assisted with their housing costs by a government subsidy are not eligible for this program.

Elderly tax assistance is for people at least 62 years of age who meet low-income guidelines. People 55 or over on Federal disability and living alone are also eligible to apply. A husband and wife, both of whom are on Federal disability, are also eligible to apply if the applicant is at least age 55.

Elderly people living in subsidized housing may be eligible for elderly tax assistance. To request an application, call or write:
