Legal Services for the Elderly
Legal Services for the Elderly, Inc. (LSE) provides free legal services statewide to people age 60 and over. Priority is given to the needs of institutionalized persons and those at risk of institutionalization; to people who wish to avoid being placed under guardianship; and to assisting older persons to secure benefits and services available to them. LSE has a developed a client education series that provides helpful, in depth information on many frequently asked questions. Legal Services for the Elderly Hotline is the entry point for receiving legal assistance. Hotline attorneys provide information and brief services over the telephone on a broad range of legal issues. They give brief legal services about public benefits, tenant's rights, debt collection, and many other areas of the law to any Maine resident age 60 and over. They also provide information and assistance to Medicare recipients (of any age) with health insurance questions. Callers needing more extended assistance can arrange appointments with LSE lawyers or with lawyers in the private sector who work at reduced rates.
