NGA Policy Academy On Employment Opportunities For The ElderlyMaine is one of eight states selected to participate in the National Governors’ Association’s Civic Engagement Policy Academy. This will explore how to increase employment and volunteer opportunities for older persons. State teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wyoming have also been selected to participate in the Academy. Diana Scully, Director of the Office of Elder Services will be the lead on this effort. Other members of Maine’s core team include Trish Riley; Jane Gilbert; Department of Labor; Alicia Kellogg, Department of Administrative and Financial Services; Ann Schink, State Planning Office; Nancy Desisto, Department of Health and Human Services; Len Kaye, Maine Center on Aging; Meredith Jones, Maine Community Foundation; Cheryl Miller, Maine Development Foundation; Larry Gross, Southern Agency on Aging; and Judd Dolphin, AARP. The Policy Academy process will include a one–day site visit to Maine in June 2007 to facilitate initial planning and goal setting. After the site visit, a 3-day Policy Academy meeting for all of the state teams will be held in late July in Annapolis, MD. State team members will have the opportunity to work with leading experts and team members from other states as they refine their goals and begin to develop an action plan. NGA will provide customized technical assistance after the Policy Academy meeting through April 2008. This may include research, telephone consultations, and “webinars”.
